Review: Samsung Galaxy Note

The Galaxy Note occupies an odd space in the smartphone segment, positioning itself deliberately between phone and tablet, as evidenced by Samsung’s marketing material for the device. We take a look at the Note and see whether it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

Review: LG Optimus 3D (P920)

If you haven’t been living in a secluded cave in the mountains somewhere, you’ll know that three-dee is a bit of a fad at the moment (or, that’s what the manufacturers want you to think). Everybody and their dog is jumping on the bandwagon. Yes, we’re even seeing phones getting the 3D treatment. The LG Optimus 3D is the first of these to have landed on South African shores. We spent some time with it to see whether the 3D helps or hinders an otherwise solid device.

Application Review: Swiftkey X

Android is known as a mobile operating system that gives you choice. One of the choices presented to you as a user is which input method you would like to use. Quite a while ago, Swiftkey appeared as a beta, and we’ve been using every iteration of it since then, the latest being Swiftkey X.

Application Review: SuperSport.com

Posted on by Albert

We like seeing local applications in the Android Market; both locally-developed, and locally-focused. The SuperSport.com Android application from the DSTv online team is just that – and it does exactly what you think it does: sport news, schedules, scores, and more – right in your pocket.

Now, being the geeks that we are, we’re not big on sport. That being said, we do watch the occasional game, and we do know a thing or two about applications – and the SuperSport.com effort pleasantly surprised us. The interface is intuitive, and things are both where you expect them to be and easy to get to – especially with an ubiquitous pull-up menu that allows you to jump to a specific sport / category.

The home page shows the latest news stories, and tapping through to a story gives a clean, easy-to-read view topped with a photo. You’ve also got a shortcut to live scores, something which could be very handy if you’re nowhere near a television or radio while your favourite team is playing. Each sport / category has three tabs that filters news, scores and schedules / programs / logs to only show what’s relevant. So, all in all the application does what it does quite well.

The only real problem that we had was that it only supports portrait orientation. So, add support for landscape orientation, and throw in some widgets that shows the live score of choice, or the latest news to the user at a glance, and the application will be pretty perfect.
